Iran Labels California ‘New Territory’ in Trump Taunt

Iran Labels California ‘New Territory’ in Trump Taunt

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Iran has responded sharply to US President Donald Trump’s latest remarks about the Strait of Hormuz, with an official Iranian social media account posting a provocative map that labelled California as a “new territory” of Iran.

The exchange came after Trump shared an image on Truth Social showing the Strait of Hormuz highlighted and described as “NEW U.S. Territory.” The post followed Trump's earlier comments suggesting that the strategically important waterway could become US territory after the ongoing conflict ends.

The White House later reposted Trump's message on X, further drawing attention to the US position on the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran Responds With California Map

In response, the official X account of the Iranian Consulate General in Hyderabad shared a map of the United States with California highlighted in blue.

The image carried the words:

“NEW TERRITORY OF ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN.”

The post appeared to be a satirical response to Trump's depiction of the Strait of Hormuz as new US territory. California was likely chosen because the state is home to one of the world's largest Iranian-American communities, particularly in the Los Angeles region.

Iranian Official Criticises Trump

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi also responded to Trump's post on X.

Gharibabadi wrote that Trump's claims about the Strait of Hormuz were based on a “delusion” and warned that the situation would either correct Trump's understanding or lead Iran to challenge what he described as the US president's false assumptions.

His remarks added to the growing diplomatic and political tension between Tehran and Washington over the strategic waterway.

Why California Has Significance for Iran

California has a particularly large Iranian-American population. The Los Angeles metropolitan area is home to a major Iranian diaspora community, with the region often referred to as “Tehrangeles.”

According to the Iranian Diaspora Dashboard hosted by UCLA's Center for Near Eastern Studies, an estimated 141,000 Iranian Americans live in Los Angeles County.

The Iranian-American population in Southern California grew significantly after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, with Los Angeles becoming an important centre for Iranian cultural, business and community life outside Iran.

What Is Happening in the Strait of Hormuz?

The latest exchange comes amid continuing tensions between Iran and the United States following months of conflict and diplomatic disputes.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important maritime routes. It connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is a major route for global energy shipments.

Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding in June aimed at ending the conflict and creating a path toward a broader agreement. However, negotiations have since faced difficulties, particularly over how the agreement should be implemented and how navigation through the Strait of Hormuz should be managed.

Talks involving Iran and Oman over navigation arrangements in the waterway have continued, but no major breakthrough has been announced.

Why the Exchange Matters

The social media exchange between Trump and Iranian officials reflects the broader diplomatic confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

Trump's claim regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's sarcastic response involving California have added a highly public and symbolic dimension to the dispute. While the California map was presented as a response to Trump's post, the wider disagreement centres on control, navigation and security around one of the world's most important shipping routes.

The situation remains closely watched because any disruption to navigation through the Strait of Hormuz could have significant consequences for international trade and global energy markets.
