In a stunning performance, Jannik Sinner began his Erste Bank Open journey with a decisive 6-0, 6-2 victory over Daniel Altmaier, completing the match in merely 58 minutes. The 24-year-old Italian, who secured the Vienna title in 2023, showcased his skill with 19 winners and only seven unforced errors, facing no break points. This victory stands as his fastest match of the 2025 season and continues his remarkable run of 17 matches unbeaten on indoor hard courts.
Sinner’s superiority was evident right from the outset, as his powerful ball-striking and consistent play left Altmaier struggling throughout. “I felt everything clicked in the first set,” Sinner expressed. “Playing indoors demands caution; if your opponent serves well, breaking them is tough. I'm thrilled with today's performance, which not only felt great but also bodes well for the tournament.”
Previously, Sinner's fastest match of the year happened in Cincinnati against Daniel Elahi Galan, which took 59 minutes. Against Altmaier, Sinner's impeccable form underscored his rigorous preparation and sharp focus, providing a robust start to the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna.
He will next take on fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli, who triumphed over Tomas Machac with a score of 7-6(6), 6-2 in his first match. The upcoming match promises to be a captivating contest between the two countrymen, both eager to progress in the event.
Other leading players had a solid start as well. Daniil Medvedev, returning from his triumph in Almaty, faced Nuno Borges, winning 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-2 to start his Vienna journey. Although he missed two match points in the second-set tiebreak, Medvedev rebounded effectively, preparing for a rematch against Corentin Moutet after their Almaty final.
Matteo Berrettini advanced by defeating Alexei Popyrin 7-6(5), 6-3, aiming for his fourth consecutive quarter-final appearance in Vienna, with Cameron Norrie possibly next in line. Meanwhile, third seed Alex de Minaur bested Austrian wildcard Filip Misolic with a score of 6-4, 6-4, continuing his pursuit of a second ATP 500 title this year.
Tallon Griekspoor was the first to secure a spot in the quarter-finals, narrowly edging Brandon Nakashima 7-6(4), 7-6(2). He awaits the victor of the match between second seed Alexander Zverev and qualifier Matteo Arnaldi, promising yet another energetic encounter.
The Erste Bank Open has kicked off with remarkable showings from several elite players, underscoring the competitive nature of the event and Sinner’s potent form as he looks to defend his title. This inaugural day sets up an exhilarating series of matches in the rounds to come.
