India boasts a myriad of breathtaking landscapes, from tranquil beaches to towering peaks. Among these, the Khardung La Challenge stands out as one of the highest ultra-marathons globally, presenting an exceptional test of mental and physical endurance. Runners face extreme conditions, including thin air and plunging temperatures.
A Unique Running Experience
Each year in Ladakh, renowned for its stunning yet challenging terrain, the Khardung La Challenge unfolds, spanning 72 kilometers and ascending to a staggering elevation of 17,618 feet. At this altitude, oxygen availability is approximately 50% lower than at sea level, presenting a formidable challenge with each breath and footstep.
Beginning in 2012 with just 11 participants, this remarkable race has burgeoned into a global phenomenon, drawing nearly 250 competitors in 2023, including top-tier athletes from around the world.
An Adventure in Extraordinary Terrain
Recent coverage by National Geographic has rekindled interest in this iconic race. Their series “India From Above” features stunning aerial footage of the Ladakh mountains as runners navigate steep inclines, rocky trails, and relentless winds.
The most daunting aspect of the marathon is the ascent to Khardung La Pass, one of the highest motorable passes worldwide. The continuous incline leaves runners gasping for breath, with many experiencing dizziness, fatigue, and nausea due to the decreased oxygen levels.
Of the total 72 kilometers, nearly 60 kilometers are run at altitudes exceeding 14,000 feet, where mere survival becomes a considerable feat.
Notable Achievements in 2025
Over the years, the Khardung La Challenge has birthed legendary tales, including Shabbir Hussain’s historic three-year winning streak, culminating in another triumph in the men’s category in 2025. Meanwhile, Namgyal Lhamo excelled in the women’s category, earning accolades for her resilience amidst one of the toughest races globally.
Exclusively for the Elite
The event's organizers assert that the Khardung La Challenge is reserved for “only the fittest and most experienced runners.” The potential for altitude sickness, dehydration, and sudden weather fluctuations renders this race perilous for novices.
Athletes undergo extensive training, emphasizing long-distance running and acclimatization to low-oxygen environments. Many competitors spend weeks in Ladakh prior to the race to adapt to its unique conditions.
Insights on Khardung La Pass
Khardung La Pass, located in the Ladakh region, is a vital route linking Leh to the Nubra and Shyok valleys, renowned for its military significance. For travelers, it represents a bucket-list destination, attracting countless bikers eager to traverse some of the world's highest roads.
Despite its frequent snow cover and rugged mountain backdrop, the pass unveils breathtaking vistas that seem plucked from a dream.
More Than Just a Race
For participants, the Khardung La Challenge transcends mere competition; it embodies a profound personal journey. It imparts lessons in discipline, perseverance, and courage, all amidst the rich local culture, the stunningly harsh environment, and the warm hospitality of the Ladakhi people.
