A fresh possibility of renewed talks between the United States and North Korea has emerged, with South Korea’s intelligence agency reportedly assessing that a summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could take place at any time.
South Korean lawmaker Youn Kun-young said on Tuesday that the National Intelligence Service had assessed that a North Korea-US Summit should be considered possible at any time. However, officials have not presented evidence of direct or concrete communication between Washington and Pyongyang. The assessment comes after Trump said in August that he intended to meet Kim Jong Un again. While Washington has shown renewed interest in rebuilding communication, North Korea has so far maintained a cautious public response.
Trump has repeatedly highlighted his past relationship with Kim, saying that maintaining a good relationship with the North Korean leader is important. He has also made comments about North Korea's growing nuclear capabilities. During Trump's first presidency, he and Kim held three high-profile meetings. Despite the historic encounters, the talks failed to produce a lasting agreement on denuclearisation.
Although Pyongyang has acknowledged that Kim has positive memories of Trump and described relations between the two leaders as good, it has not directly accepted Trump's latest proposal for another summit. The situation has therefore created uncertainty over whether another US North Korea Talks initiative could move quickly from political statements to direct negotiations.
The possibility of renewed diplomacy comes as the United States and South Korea have adjusted the scale of their joint military exercises. The changes have generated concern among some US allies in Asia while also prompting speculation about Washington's broader strategy toward the Korean Peninsula. North Korea has continued to object strongly to joint military exercises involving the United States and South Korea, describing such activities as threatening.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has pursued a more engagement-focused approach toward North Korea since taking office. His administration has expressed interest in reducing tensions and reopening channels of communication with Pyongyang. North Korea, however, has rejected several South Korean overtures and has described Seoul as its most hostile adversary.

For now, there is no confirmed date or concrete arrangement for a Trump-Kim meeting. The intelligence assessment suggests that diplomatic possibilities remain open, but actual negotiations would depend on direct communication between the two sides. A renewed North Korea US Summit could become a major geopolitical development if Washington and Pyongyang succeed in restoring direct dialogue. Any future meeting would likely focus on nuclear weapons, regional security, sanctions and broader relations between the two countries.
