Horse racing fans witnessed history at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday when Lippo De Carrere won the UAE President’s Cup, UK Arabian Derby (Group 1 PA). The four-year-old colt, trained by Alban de Mieulle and ridden by star jockey Mickaël Barzalona, delivered a powerful run to claim victory in front of nearly 30,000 cheering spectators.
This race was part of the 32nd UAE President’s Cup Series, now in its 13th round, and was held during the famous St. Leger Festival. The 2,000-metre turf race was not just any contest — it carried a record prize of £400,000, making it the richest Arabian horse race in both Britain and Europe.
Lippo De Carrere (Al Mourtajez x Elmanara De Carrere) showed class and determination, crossing the finish line in 2 minutes 20 seconds to take his first Group 1 PA title. The colt had earlier finished second in the French Arabian Derby, but this time he proved unbeatable.
This win marks his fourth victory from seven career starts, a sign that he is becoming one of the brightest stars in Arabian horse racing.
The race featured strong contenders from around the world. Wathnan Racing’s Moneer (trained by Damien de Watrigant and ridden by Jean-Bernard Eyquem) put in a fine effort to take second place.
In third place came Shaihaan, owned by Al Shaqab Racing, trained by François Rohaut, and ridden by Tom Marquand. Both horses, like Lippo De Carrere, are sired by the famous stallion Al Mourtajez, making this race a true showcase of Arabian bloodlines.
The UAE President’s Cup Series has become a symbol of pride for Arabian horse racing worldwide. First launched in 1994, the Cup was created to protect and promote Purebred Arabian horses, one of the oldest and most respected horse breeds in the world.
The Doncaster race once again highlighted the Cup’s growing influence on the global stage. With a record-breaking purse and a world-class line-up of horses, the event showed why Arabian racing is gaining more recognition in Europe and beyond.
The race was attended by leading figures, including Aref Hamad Al Awani, Faisal Al Rahmani, and Saud Badr Al Tonaiji, representing the UAE in London.
Matar al Yabhouni Al Daheri, Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee of the UAE President’s Cup Series, praised the event as a milestone. He said the Doncaster race “reaffirmed its global prestige and role in supporting Arabian horse owners and breeders worldwide.”
For many, the UAE President’s Cup is more than just a sporting event. It reflects the UAE’s commitment to celebrating its cultural heritage while also promoting Arabian horses on a global scale.
Arabian horses are not only admired for their beauty but also for their stamina and intelligence. Events like these help breeders, owners, and trainers showcase the best qualities of the breed to an international audience.
For Doncaster, hosting this event during the historic St. Leger Festival added even more significance, linking the tradition of British racing with the heritage of Arabian racing.
Lippo De Carrere’s victory is likely just the beginning of a successful career. His strong record, bloodline, and recent Group 1 PA title position him as one of the horses to watch in the coming years.
For the UAE President’s Cup, the Doncaster edition proved once again that Arabian racing can draw huge crowds and compete with the biggest events in the sport. The success of this race also paves the way for more such events across Europe and the world.
The UAE President’s Cup at Doncaster was not only about who crossed the finish line first — it was about culture, heritage, and global sporting excellence. Lippo De Carrere’s victory added another golden chapter to the history of this prestigious Cup.
As Arabian horse racing continues to grow internationally, the UAE President’s Cup remains a beacon of tradition and progress. Saturday’s race reminded the world that these magnificent horses, with their speed, elegance, and endurance, truly deserve their place at the very top of the global racing calendar.
