A Malaysia Airlines flight travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah was diverted to Chennai after the aircraft developed a suspected technical problem during the journey. Flight MH156 was carrying 186 passengers when the issue was reported. The aircraft had departed Kuala Lumpur at around 3:30pm on Monday. During the flight, the pilot reportedly detected a problem involving the aircraft’s second engine and contacted air traffic control to request permission to land at Chennai.
Following the pilot’s request, Chennai Airport activated emergency procedures to prepare for the aircraft’s arrival. Emergency response teams were placed on standby as a precaution while the aircraft approached the airport. The flight landed safely at Chennai at around 4:44pm local time. After landing, the aircraft was moved to a parking or remote bay so that technical teams could inspect it. All 186 passengers were able to leave the aircraft safely. No injuries were reported.
Airport officials said the issue involved Engine No. 2. Malaysia Airlines and relevant technical personnel began examining the aircraft to determine the exact cause of the problem. The aircraft remained on the ground while the assessment was carried out. Passengers were also provided accommodation at the airport following the diversion.
The incident highlights the importance of quick decisions during an in-flight technical problem. After the suspected engine malfunction was detected, the pilot requested permission to divert to Chennai instead of continuing towards Jeddah. The decision allowed the aircraft to reach an airport where emergency services and technical support were available.
The diversion meant that the scheduled Jeddah flight could not continue its original journey as planned. The aircraft was kept at Chennai while engineers assessed the technical issue. Despite the emergency response, airport operations at Chennai continued normally, according to officials.
The most important development was that all 186 passengers on board reached Chennai safely. Emergency teams were prepared before landing, but there were no reported injuries among passengers. Further decisions regarding the aircraft and the continuation of the journey were expected after completion of the technical inspection.
