Edmonton – On Thursday, Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux revealed he is resigning from his position, becoming the second Tory to part ways with the party this week after the federal budget was revealed. Jeneroux, serving the Edmonton Riverbend constituency since 2015, cited that his decision was tough yet essential, without delving into specifics.
“Choosing to step down hasn’t been easy, but I believe it’s the right choice,” he said, commending his colleagues from all parties and stressing his faith in Canada’s journey towards unity and strength.
Despite supporting Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in the last federal election, Jeneroux acknowledged that the election results fell short of his hopes, yet he holds deep respect for the commitment shown by all Parliament members. He mentioned that he had briefed the Opposition Whip regarding his resignation earlier and aspires to give a closing speech in the House of Commons.
Moving forward, Jeneroux plans to concentrate on his family duties and personal obligations, stepping back from his political role. It is notable that he did not take part in Thursday evening’s Conservative sub-amendment concerning the federal budget, interpreted by the Prime Minister as a confidence vote, which the government survived with backing from other opposition factions.
His departure closely follows Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont’s shift to the Liberal Party, leading to speculation about further exits from the Conservative ranks due to worries regarding Poilievre’s leadership. D’Entremont hinted at shared doubts regarding the party's trajectory.
In his resignation announcement, Jeneroux conveyed appreciation to his supporters and requested that his family be left alone during this time. “While the outcome was not as I hoped, I hold immense respect for the many outstanding individuals in the House of Commons – across all parties – who tirelessly contribute to our nation’s improvement,” he stated.
Matt Jeneroux’s resignation signifies a critical point for the Conservative Party, shedding light on internal discord amidst debates surrounding the federal budget and party leadership. Analysts anticipate that these changes may impact ongoing discussions and strategies as the party readies itself for upcoming sessions in Parliament.
