A tragic accident unfolded near Galveston, Texas, on Monday when a Mexican Navy plane went down, resulting in the deaths of at least five individuals. The aircraft, engaged in a medical mission to transport a young burn victim, encountered poor visibility due to fog.
Flight tracking information indicated that the plane was last recorded at 3:01 PM local time (21:01 GMT) as it flew over Galveston Bay, in proximity to Scholes International Airport.
The humanitarian mission was coordinated by the Michou y Mau Foundation, dedicated to providing essential medical support to children in Mexico suffering from severe burn injuries.
As reported by Mexico's Secretariat of the Navy, one person is still unaccounted for, while two others have been rescued and are safe.
Witnesses shared harrowing video footage of the wreckage submerged in water, with both emergency personnel and local volunteers bravely entering the frigid waters in search of survivors and wreckage debris.
Sky Decker Jr., a local yacht captain, recounted his experience taking police officers to the site before diving in, where he discovered a gravely injured woman trapped inside the wreck. He painted a chilling picture, noting, “She had barely three inches of air to breathe. The water was mixed with jet fuel, and the fumes were intense. She was desperately fighting for her life.”
The Mexican Navy has confirmed that search and rescue operations continue and are taking place in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard to locate the missing individuals and help those who survived.
Rescue teams, including divers, are facing challenging conditions due to the heavy fog enveloping the area surrounding Scholes International Airport.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media platform X, the Michou y Mau Foundation extended condolences to the victims' families impacted by this devastating event.
