In a recent interview at the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump voiced his reservations regarding the capability of Iranian exile Reza Pahlavi to garner support within Iran to assume leadership. He remarked that while Pahlavi “seems very nice”, doubts linger about his actual influence.
Pahlavi, aged 65, is the son of Iran’s last monarch and has been living in exile since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. He has emerged as a significant figure for many protesting against the Iranian regime, which has seen thousands fall victim to a brutal government crackdown. Yet, despite his visibility, unity among various opposition factions remains elusive.
Addressing the Ukraine crisis, Trump stated his belief that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is a primary hurdle to achieving peace with Russia. He implied that Russian President Vladimir Putin is willing to negotiate, while Zelenskiy has yet to comply with proposed terms.
On the home front, Trump dismissed GOP worries regarding the Justice Department’s investigation into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, urging party members to remain loyal and countering fears that this investigation could influence inflation rates.
Trump acknowledged the potential for the Iranian regime to topple amidst the current protests, saying “any regime can fail.” He highlighted the uncertainty that lies ahead for Iran’s political landscape.
Furthermore, Trump praised Venezuelan acting president Delcy Rodriguez and mentioned plans to meet with opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, referring to her as “a very nice woman” and stating that their talks would center around fundamental issues.
In discussing the American economy, Trump reiterated his confidence in its performance, boasting strong job statistics and indicating plans to showcase this at the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos, where he is set to meet with leaders from Switzerland, Poland, and Egypt.
Overall, Trump's remarks highlight his measured stance regarding Iran’s opposition while reflecting his ongoing engagement with both international dilemmas and domestic political hurdles as he navigates through his current term.
