World Cup 2026 Tickets See Record 500 Million Requests Worldwide

World Cup 2026 Tickets See Record 500 Million Requests Worldwide

Post by : Meena Ariff

FIFA has announced an overwhelming demand for tickets to the 2026 World Cup, revealing that more than 500 million requests have been submitted by fans across the globe. This milestone comes as the ticket application window for the lottery-based allocation officially closed.

Fans from all 211 FIFA member countries and territories applied for seats at the expanded 48-team tournament, which will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Successful applicants will be informed no earlier than February 5, as the organisation begins the lottery allocation process.

High Interest From Around the World

While local supporters from the host nations naturally showed high interest, the largest number of ticket applications outside these countries came from Germany, England, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, and Colombia. The enthusiasm demonstrates the World Cup’s truly global appeal.

The most requested match was Colombia’s clash against Portugal in Miami on June 27, followed closely by Mexico’s game against South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18. Interest in the World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19 was also exceptionally high.

FIFA Praises Fans’ Enthusiasm

FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the surge in requests as historic: “Half a billion ticket requests in just over a month is more than demand – it’s a global statement.” He expressed gratitude to fans worldwide while acknowledging the challenge of limited stadium capacity.

“Our only regret is that we cannot welcome every fan inside the stadiums,” he added, highlighting the difficulty of meeting such extraordinary demand.

Controversy Over Ticket Prices

Despite the surge in interest, FIFA has faced criticism over the high cost of tickets. Many fan groups labelled the prices as “astronomical” and beyond the reach of average supporters. Football enthusiasts noted that ticket prices for 2026 are almost five times higher than those for the 2022 World Cup.

To address these concerns, FIFA introduced a new category of cut-price tickets in December, with seats available for $60 (around €51). The aim is to ensure that more fans can attend the tournament without being priced out.

A Historic Global Event

The 2026 World Cup is shaping up to be one of the largest and most widely attended football events in history. Even with the ticket pricing debate, the record-breaking number of applications shows that fans around the world are eager to witness the spectacle in person.
