Mexico has launched an investigation into the president of the Miss Universe organization over allegations of drug and arms trafficking, as well as fuel theft, raising new controversy around the global beauty pageant. The Attorney General’s Office announced on Wednesday that it has issued 13 arrest warrants as part of the probe, without revealing the names of all individuals involved.
Local media reports indicate that one of the warrants is for Raul Rocha, a Mexican national who owns 50% of the Miss Universe organization through his company, Legacy Holding Group USA. The investigation, which dates back to 2024, refers to Rocha as "Raul R" in line with Mexican legal practices. Authorities have said they will provide updates on his status in due course. Rocha has not responded to requests for comment, and the Miss Universe organization has not issued an official statement.
The news comes shortly after Mexican contestant Fatima Bosch won this year’s Miss Universe contest held in Thailand. Earlier in the competition, Bosch made headlines by leading a contestant walkout, claiming that pageant director Nawat Itsaragrisil called her a "dumbhead," a claim the director denied, saying it was a misunderstanding. Bosch received public support from Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, who praised her for speaking out and setting an example for women.
Rocha acquired his stake in the Miss Universe organization in 2024 from JKN Global Group. The investigation has sparked widespread attention, intertwining legal scrutiny with the world of international pageantry. Authorities are continuing their probe to determine the extent of involvement of Rocha and others in the alleged criminal activities.
This case adds a serious dimension to ongoing discussions about the governance and operations of international beauty pageants, highlighting how legal and corporate issues can intersect with public events and cultural institutions
