Mounjaro Clinches Top Spot in India, Achieves ₹100 Crore in October Sales

Mounjaro Clinches Top Spot in India, Achieves ₹100 Crore in October Sales

Post by : Saif Rahman

Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro, a leading treatment for obesity and diabetes, has emerged as the best-selling drug in India for October, generating ₹100 crore ($11.38 million) in sales within just one month. Launched in March 2025, Mounjaro quickly gained traction, signaling a heightened interest in solutions for diabetes and obesity among the Indian populace. A recent study by The Lancet revealed that around 101 million individuals in India, or 11.4 percent of the population, are affected by diabetes.

This injectable medication is designed for individuals with type 2 diabetes who are either overweight or obese. Mounjaro functions by targeting two vital hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, that help regulate blood sugar and appetite, facilitating weight management and improving overall health. Medical professionals advise that, by delaying digestion and curbing hunger, Mounjaro can enable safe and consistent weight loss.

Since its introduction, Mounjaro has significantly outperformed Wegovy, the competitor released by Novo Nordisk in June. In October alone, usage of Mounjaro in India surpassed Wegovy by a factor of ten. The total revenue generated by Mounjaro has reached ₹333 crore since its launch. Various studies indicate that tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, may lead to greater weight loss compared to semaglutide, known as Ozempic.

Despite its efficacy, experts stress that Mounjaro is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Medical supervision is crucial, especially for patients with diabetes or other existing health concerns. The success of Mounjaro underscores a growing demand for treatments capable of managing blood sugar levels and body weight in India. With increasing instances of diabetes and obesity, medications like Mounjaro are becoming essential components in healthcare strategies.

The surge in popularity for the drug indicates a growing awareness among individuals regarding their health and a willingness to seek effective treatments to enhance their quality of life. Nevertheless, physicians emphasize that a balanced diet, consistent exercise, and healthy nutrition remain vital alongside any pharmacological intervention.

Mounjaro’s swift ascension marks a significant development in India’s healthcare landscape, illustrating a growing preference for contemporary treatments addressing obesity and diabetes—conditions that impact millions nationwide.
