Nagoya in Japan was hit by exceptionally heavy rain, causing widespread flooding across several parts of the city and creating dangerous conditions on roads and residential streets. The intense downpour was so powerful that water erupted several metres into the air from underground manholes, while roads quickly became filled with fast-moving water. The city received 104.5 millimetres of rain within a single hour on September 8. Authorities recorded the figure as the highest hourly rainfall ever observed in Nagoya, highlighting the extraordinary intensity of the weather event. Homes and roads were inundated as water levels rose rapidly. Several vehicles became stranded, while the Ueda River overflowed and added to the flooding in affected areas.
The extreme weather also caused major disruption to public transportation. Subway and railway services were suspended in response to the dangerous conditions, leaving commuters and travellers facing significant delays. Emergency authorities worked to move people away from areas affected by rising water. Around 3,500 residents and others sought shelter as a precaution, reflecting the seriousness of the situation. The flooding also raised concerns for teams and officials connected with the upcoming Asian Games, as Nagoya is among the principal host cities for the event.
Nearly 400 athletes and staff members connected with the Asian Games were moved to higher ground as a precaution. The decision was taken amid concerns over flooding and worsening local conditions. The movement of athletes and staff was intended to reduce their exposure to areas affected by rising water and transport disruption. The incident comes shortly before the 2026 Asian Games, which are scheduled to officially begin on September 19. Nagoya is expected to play an important role as one of the main host cities.
