A powerful storm swept across Nagoya and other parts of Japan's Tokai region on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, bringing torrential rain, thunderstorms and strong winds of nearly 100 km/h. The severe weather triggered flash flooding, reduced visibility on city streets and caused widespread disruption across the region.
The storm affected several locations during the afternoon, with Nagoya City among the hardest-hit areas. Heavy rainfall created difficult travel conditions as roads were drenched by intense downpours.
In Nagoya City's Higashi Ward, loud thunder echoed across the area before heavy rain began falling at around 2:00 p.m. Large raindrops quickly turned into intense rainfall, reducing visibility and making road conditions hazardous.
The unstable weather developed as a trough of low pressure combined with moist air, producing widespread thunderstorms and persistent heavy rain across the Tokai region throughout the afternoon.
The severe weather also caused major power disruptions across central Japan. According to Chubu Electric Power Grid, more than 4,300 households in Aichi Prefecture lost electricity, while around 3,500 households in neighbouring Gifu Prefecture were left without power.
In total, over 7,800 homes experienced power outages as thunderstorms moved across the region.
Heavy rain was expected to continue in parts of the Tokai region until late at night, with weather conditions remaining unstable. Authorities continued monitoring the situation as rainfall and thunderstorms persisted across affected areas.
