A devastating natural disaster has struck the Nepal-Tibet border after powerful Flash Floods and landslides swept through villages, roads and bridges on August 26. At least 165 people have died, while more than 1,000 remain missing. Many missing people are foreign tourists and pilgrims, including visitors from India, Australia, Britain, Malaysia, South Korea and the United States. Two Singaporeans are also reportedly among those missing.
Rescue teams are working to locate survivors despite difficult conditions. Nearly 800 emergency personnel have been deployed on the Tibetan side, while Nepal's security forces are conducting rescue flights and transporting victims to safer areas. Authorities are also searching hospitals and affected settlements for missing people. South Korea has sent a response team to help locate nine workers who remain unreachable near a hydropower project.
Experts have warned that another Flood Alert may be necessary because a blockage remains upstream along the river near the Nepal-China border. If the obstruction suddenly breaks, another powerful surge could affect downstream areas. The disaster is also raising concerns about Climate Change, as warmer temperatures, melting glaciers and intense rainfall are increasing the risk of floods and landslides across the Himalayas.
China has activated its highest-level disaster response and allocated more than 200 million yuan for relief operations. Specialist teams, vehicles, search dogs and emergency equipment have been sent to affected areas.
