Niger Airport Attack Kills 13, Security Forces Repel Assault

Niger Airport Attack Kills 13, Security Forces Repel Assault

Post by : Shakul

At least 13 people were killed after armed attackers launched a major assault on Niger's main international airport and a nearby military base in the capital, Niamey, on Thursday. Officials said the victims included 11 soldiers and two civilians.

The attack took place early in the morning when heavily armed militants targeted the Diori Hamani International Airport complex. Security forces quickly responded, leading to several hours of intense gun battles in and around the area.

According to Niger's Defence Ministry, security personnel managed to stop the attackers and regain control of the situation. Authorities said 22 militants were killed during the operation, while around 20 suspects were arrested. Four people were also reported injured.

The al-Qaeda-linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) later claimed responsibility for the attack. The group said it had targeted both the airport and a nearby military facility.

Despite the violence, government officials confirmed that the airport remained secure and continued operating normally. Additional security forces were deployed to the area, and a large-scale operation was launched to ensure public safety.

The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Niger and other countries in the Sahel region, where armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS continue to carry out deadly attacks against military and civilian targets.
