More than 900 individuals connected to 11 hydropower projects in Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts are currently unreachable after catastrophic floods struck the Bhote Koshi River on August 26, as reported by the Independent Power Producers’ Association of Nepal (IPPAN).

Of these, 730 individuals are linked to six hydropower projects in Rasuwa, while 204 are from five projects in Nuwakot, according to IPPAN.

Upper Trishuli-1 Encountering Severe Impact

The Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project, with a capacity of 216 MW located in Rasuwa, has reported the largest number of uncontactable workers.

As per IPPAN, 576 individuals tied to this project are currently unreachable. This project, developed by Nepal Water and Energy Development Company (NWEDC) with support from South Korean investors, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and local partners, is severely affected.

Another project, the 37-MW Upper Trishuli-3B in Nuwakot, has reported 158 uncontactable workers.

93 Individuals Missing from Rasuwagadhi Project

The 111-MW Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project reported 93 individuals are currently unreachable.

This number stands as the third-highest among the affected hydropower projects.

According to IPPAN, the residual 107 individuals are associated with eight additional hydropower projects, some still under construction and others fully operational.

Floods Impact 13 Hydropower Projects

The August 26 floods have notably impacted 13 hydropower projects across the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, with a total installed capacity of 675.6 MW, IPPAN stated.

Additionally, significant damage has been reported at hydropower facilities and related infrastructure in both districts.

Death Toll from Nepal Floods Reaches 626

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has announced that 626 bodies have been recovered from the floods as of 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The authority has also noted that 2,426 individuals remain uncontactable.

The flooding was triggered by a sudden surge in the Bhote Koshi River, leading to widespread casualties and substantial damage to hydropower projects, infrastructure, roads, and bridges in the affected regions.
