Fashion continuously evolves, yet certain trends resurface with a fresh perspective. The peplum, a top or dress featuring a flared ruffle at the waist, is set to make its mark again in 2025. This silhouette adds a touch of elegance and drama, and it's being embraced by global celebrities with renewed enthusiasm.
Recently, actress Ashley Park donned a shimmering lavender peplum dress with an exaggerated ruffle at the waist and a fitted bodice. Pop star Ariana Grande also showed her flair for the trend in a strapless pink gown featuring a reverse peplum detail at the back. In India, actress Tripti Dimrii is merging peplum with Indian fusion, sporting a corseted peplum top paired with sheer, intricate sharara pants for a striking, contemporary appeal.
On the catwalks, designers are reinventing the peplum for modern tastes. Labels like Rina Dhaka, Tanieya Khanuja, Ashlyn, Bally, Alaïa, and Dries Van Noten are showcasing peplum designs with sharper tailoring, asymmetric cuts, and innovative fabrics like tulle, organza, and lightweight crinoline. Designer Rina Dhaka notes, “The peplum has origins in Victorian dressmaking and saw resurgence in the 1990s. Today, we are using contemporary materials and sustainable textiles to create striking, adaptable pieces that blend retro charm with modern elegance.”
The peplum has a rich history, hailing back to the ancient Greek “peplos,” a tunic that flared at the waist. In the 1940s, Christian Dior made it mainstream with his “New Look” collection, emphasizing fitted waists and flared overskirts for an elegant hourglass figure. The 1980s saw another revival marked by structured blazers and dramatic shoulder pads in the era of power dressing. The trend gracefully transitioned into the 2010s, paired with skinny jeans and bold accessories on red carpets globally.
Stylist Isha Bhansali shares advice for nailing this trend, especially tailored for Indian body types. She recommends darker or solid colors to streamline the look, pairing peplums with heels to elongate the body, and opting for delicate jewelry. For a casual appearance, combining a soft, flowy peplum top with comfortable jeans works wonders. For an elegant Indian fusion, she suggests corseted peplums paired with shararas or sheer pants for a touch of drama.
As we approach 2025, the peplum stands out not merely as a nostalgic revival, but as a dynamic, modern trend that harmonizes history, celebrity allure, and contemporary flair, reaffirming the notion that some fashion statements are indeed timeless.
