The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre (ADSCC) has revealed a pioneering treatment for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), utilizing the THERAKOS CELLEX platform for photopheresis. This initiative is part of an approved clinical trial by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, offering a new therapeutic option for individuals battling this challenging neurological condition, aimed at enhancing their quality of life and symptom management.
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the nervous system, leading to mobility, balance, and speech issues. Despite the availability of existing treatments, many patients find that standard therapies become ineffective over time, highlighting the urgent need for alternative solutions. The extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) method being investigated by ADSCC brings new hope to those who have limited options left.
ECP, previously utilized for other medical conditions like graft-versus-host disease and specific lymphomas, works for MS patients by extracting their white blood cells, treating them with light externally, and reintroducing them to the patient. This method aims to recalibrate the immune system, potentially stalling MS progression and alleviating symptoms, including walking difficulties and balance issues.
As part of the PHOMS clinical study, which has received approval from the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the focus is on patients diagnosed with Secondary Progressive MS and Relapsing-Remitting MS. Initial reports from many participants indicate noticeable improvements in their walking, balance, and speech capabilities, advances not achievable through standard therapies. Such encouraging outcomes point to photopheresis as a promising alternative for those living with MS.
Prof. Yendry Ventura, CEO of ADSCC, emphasized the significance of collaborations among Abu Dhabi's health sector stakeholders, including the DOH and the MS Society, in achieving these research milestones. He noted that forthcoming results could pave the way for global acceptance of this novel MS treatment, reinforcing the UAE’s strategic role in advancing cell and gene therapy.
Sandra Thompson, Co-CEO of Therakos LLC, commended ADSCC's commitment and expertise, stating that this partnership would significantly advance the MS community's progress in the UAE. The collaboration aims to merge scientific innovation with patient-centered research, improving treatment outcomes and instilling hope for countless MS patients.
The launch of this advanced treatment represents a significant breakthrough for the global MS community. By intertwining scientific prowess, cutting-edge technology, and patient-focused care, the UAE is forging a new path of optimism for those grappling with this challenging condition. With ongoing research and collaboration, photopheresis could evolve into a mainstream treatment for MS, enhancing patient relief and quality of life on a global scale.
