Pope Leo Concludes Holy Year, Advocates for Compassion Towards Migrants

Pope Leo Concludes Holy Year, Advocates for Compassion Towards Migrants

Post by : Saif Rahman

Pope Leo officially concluded the Holy Year of the Catholic Church on Tuesday in Vatican City, symbolizing an end to an enriching time filled with prayer, reflection, and pilgrimage. As he closed the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, he delivered an impactful message urging Christians everywhere to extend kindness, particularly to foreigners and those in distress.

This Holy Year, also termed a Jubilee, occurs approximately every 25 years. It is a unique opportunity for forgiveness, tranquility, and spiritual rejuvenation. Throughout this time, pilgrims were permitted to walk through sacred Holy Doors at significant churches in Rome and participate in papal activities. This year's events saw around 33.5 million pilgrims from various backgrounds, making it one of the most attended Jubilees in recent history.

During the closing rites, Pope Leo cautioned against perceiving individuals as mere commodities for profit. He remarked that contemporary society often transforms human mobility, journeys, and aspirations into commercial interactions. He invited believers to contemplate their experiences throughout the Holy Year and consider how they might recognize a neighbor in a foreigner and a seeker in a stranger.

A central focus of Pope Leo’s early papacy has been the plight of immigrants. He urged Christians to transcend borders and fears, approaching these challenges with compassion. He emphasized that faith should inspire action, especially concerning support for those who are impoverished, displaced, or in search of improved prospects.

The conclusion of the Holy Year also holds significant historical importance. It was inaugurated by Pope Francis and culminated with Pope Leo, a rare event not witnessed in over 300 years. Following Pope Francis’s passing in April after a 12-year leadership, Pope Leo, the first pope from the U.S., has vowed to uphold many of Francis’ vital initiatives.

Attendees of the Jubilee represented 185 nations, with notable numbers from Italy, the United States, Spain, Brazil, and Poland. Vatican officials highlighted that the event showcased the extensive reach of the Catholic Church and a collective aspiration for peace and spiritual rejuvenation.

Looking forward, the forthcoming regular Holy Year is anticipated no sooner than 2033, marking 2,000 years since the death of Jesus. Until then, Pope Leo encouraged believers to embody the spirit of the Holy Year in their everyday lives by opting for kindness over fear and compassion over profit.
