A tragic road accident in northeastern Thailand claimed the lives of nine Buddhist monks after a pickup truck driven by an 11-year-old boy crashed into a group of monks during a religious pilgrimage. The incident occurred in Mukdahan Province while the monks were walking along the roadside.
According to local authorities, a total of 35 monks had begun a 260-kilometre pilgrimage to Ubon Ratchathani Province just 30 minutes before the accident. Five monks died at the scene, while four others later succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital.
Several Monks Remain Hospitalised
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the injured to nearby medical facilities. Officials confirmed that 13 monks were hospitalized, with three reported to be in critical condition as doctors continue providing intensive treatment.
Rescue teams, police officers, and medical personnel worked together to clear the accident site and assist the injured victims.
Police Launch Investigation
Police have taken the 11-year-old boy into custody and said he will be questioned in the presence of child protection officers. Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances that led to the crash.

Witnesses among the monks told investigators that the pickup truck appeared to be swerving before leaving the road and crashing into the group. Security camera footage reportedly captured the moments leading up to the collision.
Pilgrimage Ended in Tragedy
The monks were participating in a traditional religious pilgrimage, walking in a single line along the roadside when the pickup truck struck them. The spiritual journey was intended to cover approximately 260 kilometres before reaching its final destination.
The accident has shocked local communities and prompted an outpouring of condolences for the victims and their families.
Authorities Review Road Safety
Officials are continuing to investigate whether speeding, driver error, or other factors contributed to the fatal collision. Authorities are also reviewing road safety measures to help protect pedestrians and religious groups participating in long-distance pilgrimages.
Further updates are expected once investigators complete their examination of the accident scene and vehicle.
