Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has introduced a new generation of its proprietary mobile processor, marking another important step in the company's effort to gain greater control over the technology used in its premium devices. The newly unveiled Xring O3 follows the company's first in-house smartphone chip, the Xring O1, which was introduced in 2025. Xiaomi's latest move reflects the growing competition among major smartphone manufacturers to develop their own processors instead of relying entirely on external suppliers. The company is looking to strengthen its smartphone processor business while reducing potential supply-chain risks associated with depending on third-party chipmakers.
Two people familiar with the matter said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, widely known as TSMC, will manufacture the Xring O3 using its advanced 3-nanometre production technology. The sources requested anonymity because Xiaomi's manufacturing plans have not been publicly disclosed. Xiaomi and TSMC had not immediately provided comments regarding the reported production arrangement, manufacturing technology or expected shipment volumes. The use of advanced manufacturing technology could help Xiaomi improve the efficiency and performance of its next-generation mobile devices.
One of the sources said the new processor is expected to be used in an upcoming flagship foldable smartphone from Xiaomi. The source also indicated that Xiaomi is targeting shipments of between 200,000 and 300,000 units of the device. If achieved, the launch could further strengthen Xiaomi's position in the premium foldable smartphone market, where competition has intensified among leading technology companies. A powerful processor is particularly important for foldable devices because manufacturers need to balance high performance with battery efficiency, heat management and compact hardware designs.
The development of its own chips is part of Xiaomi's wider strategy to gain greater control over critical components inside its devices. Developing an in-house mobile chipset can allow a smartphone manufacturer to better coordinate hardware and software while potentially reducing dependence on suppliers. The move also places Xiaomi alongside companies such as Apple, Samsung Electronics and Huawei, which have invested heavily in proprietary chip development. Modern smartphone processors combine several functions, including computing, graphics, artificial intelligence processing and image-related capabilities. These components are therefore central to a phone's overall performance.
Xiaomi said recently that cumulative shipments of products powered by the Xring O1 had exceeded one million units. The processor has been used across several categories, including smartphones, tablets and smartwatches. According to sources, Xiaomi had sold around 150,000 smartphones using the Xring O1 since its launch in May 2025. The progress of the first-generation chip has encouraged Xiaomi to continue investing in its own Xiaomi chip technology.

The semiconductor push comes as smartphone companies face intense competition in the premium market. Developing proprietary processors can help manufacturers differentiate their products and gain more control over performance, artificial intelligence features and power efficiency. Xiaomi's latest Xring development also highlights the broader importance of the global semiconductor industry, where companies are increasingly seeking secure and advanced manufacturing partnerships. With the Xring O3 expected to use TSMC's 3nm technology and potentially power Xiaomi's next flagship foldable device, the new processor could become an important part of the company's future smartphone strategy.
