Pope Leo embarked on a significant journey to the iconic Blue Mosque in Istanbul on Saturday, marking the first time he has entered a Muslim place of worship as the head of the Catholic Church. This visit is part of his inaugural four-day trip to Turkey. While he respectfully removed his shoes, he opted not to pray, conveying a message of peaceful presence and contemplation.
As the first pope from the U.S., Leo's actions are under keen observation worldwide. Dressed in white socks, he bowed slightly upon entry and devoted approximately twenty minutes to exploring the spacious mosque, which accommodates up to 10,000 worshippers. An imam and the mufti of Istanbul guided him, sharing insights about the mosque’s history and architecture. The pope appeared at ease, even exchanging light-hearted remarks with his guide, the lead muezzin who calls Muslims to prayer five times daily.
While exiting the mosque, Pope Leo humorously pointed out that he was being directed toward a door labeled “No exit.” The muezzin responded with a friendly suggestion that he could remain as long as he wished, reflecting the amicable atmosphere of the visit.
After the tour, the muezzin recounted that he had invited the pope to take a moment for prayer. Pope Leo graciously declined, preferring to simply observe. The Vatican clarified that the pope’s time in the mosque was focused on reflection, listening, and demonstrating respect for the Muslim faith. His silent presence was intended to exhibit understanding rather than religious participation.
The Blue Mosque, officially named in honor of Sultan Ahmed I, is renowned for its thousands of blue-hued tiles. It has served as a vital religious and cultural emblem in Istanbul for centuries. Located directly across from the Hagia Sophia, a pivotal site in Christianity, Pope Leo did not include the Hagia Sophia in his itinerary—unlike previous popes, including Francis in 2014. The Vatican has not provided a reason for this omission, which is especially significant given the building’s sensitive history since it was reconverted into a mosque in 2020.
Pope Leo's choice of Turkey as his initial foreign destination coincides with the 1,700th anniversary of a significant early Church council held there, which resulted in the Nicene Creed—a central tenet of faith still upheld by various Christian denominations worldwide. His visit arrives amid a climate where numerous religious communities face challenges from conflict, division, and increased violence.
During a ceremony commemorating the historical council on Friday, Pope Leo addressed Christian leaders from the Middle East, including those from Israel, Syria, Egypt, and Turkey. He condemned all acts of violence carried out in the name of religion and urged Christian groups to mend historical divisions, calling it a “scandal” that 2.6 billion Christians remain fragmented after centuries.
Pope Leo’s visit to the Blue Mosque, characterized by simple yet powerful gestures of respect, silence, and cultural appreciation, underscores his commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue. By opting not to pray while still honoring the sacred space, he has expressed a desire for connection over discord. This debut international trip as pope has already garnered attention, and observers are eager to see how his leadership will influence future interfaith relations.
