Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit India from December 4 to 5 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, a state visit extended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This high-profile visit comes as the two nations aim to review progress in bilateral relations and further strengthen their “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.” During his stay, Putin will hold detailed talks with PM Modi and meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where she will host a state banquet in his honor.
The summit provides both leaders with an opportunity to exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest and chart the future direction of India-Russia cooperation. The visit was first announced in August during National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s trip to Moscow, though exact dates were finalized later.
India and Russia share a long-standing relationship, rooted in the Soviet era, which includes strong bilateral trade, investment, and defense cooperation. Russia has been one of India’s top arms suppliers, and India remains a significant importer of Russian oil. The visit comes amid ongoing international tensions, including US-imposed tariffs on India over Russian oil imports, highlighting the strategic balancing India maintains in its foreign policy.
Earlier interactions between PM Modi and President Putin this year have set the stage for this summit. They met briefly during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China, holding an hour-long discussion, and recently, PM Modi conveyed his greetings to Putin through the Russian president’s aide, Nikolai Patrushev, during a visit to Delhi.
Putin’s India visit also underscores a rare international trip amid the Ukraine conflict, as he has significantly limited foreign travel due to the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant. Since India is not a party to the ICC, it is not obliged to detain the Russian leader.
As the world watches, this visit could be a pivotal moment for India-Russia ties, reaffirming strong economic, political, and strategic cooperation while demonstrating India’s ability to navigate complex international relations. The summit is expected to reinforce collaboration across defense, energy, and trade sectors, bolstering India’s role as a key partner for Russia in Asia.
This state visit also signals India’s commitment to maintaining robust strategic partnerships and highlights the importance of dialogue in fostering international stability, even amid global geopolitical challenges.
