Qatar Continues Its Leadership with Third Term on IMO Council

Post by : Maya Rahman

The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its standing in the maritime domain by being re-elected to the Executive Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under Category C. This represents Qatar's third consecutive term on this significant global platform. The election took place during the 34th session of the IMO Assembly in London, involving numerous member states in selecting the new council members.

This achievement underlines Qatar's influential role within the global maritime community, echoing the trust other nations place in it for its proactive approach in the maritime transport arena. Qatar's ongoing efforts to enhance maritime safety, safeguard the marine environment, and develop sustainable shipping solutions that meet international standards have been widely recognized.

Following the announcement, Qatar’s Minister of Transport, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Thani, expressed his pride in the achievement. He noted that this renewed representation underscores the global acknowledgment of Qatar's dedication to advancing the maritime sector. The Minister articulated that this third election is a result of Qatar's sound leadership, which aims to bolster the country's role in significant global organizations and establish it as a premier maritime and logistics hub in the region and beyond.

Furthermore, the Minister stressed that Qatar's position on the Executive Council exemplifies its unwavering commitment to the aims of the International Maritime Organization. He pledged that Qatar would persist in supporting the IMO’s mission to promote safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly maritime transport. He reiterated Qatar's dedication to collaborating with fellow member states to foster cooperation, share expertise, and advance the global maritime system.

He also expressed gratitude to the friendly nations that supported Qatar during the election, emphasizing that their backing reflects trust in Qatar’s capabilities and contributions. He commended the efforts of all national bodies that were pivotal in achieving this victory, highlighting their teamwork as a representation of Qatar’s collective spirit and determination for international success.

Qatar’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom and its Permanent Representative to the IMO, HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al-Thani, also commented on this milestone. He asserted that the victory underscores Qatar’s active engagement in global maritime development, with repeated elections to the Executive Council showcasing the international community's recognition of Qatar’s advancements in port infrastructure, maritime governance, and marine environmental conservation.

The Ambassador added that this renewed vote of confidence emphasizes Qatar’s commitment to be an influential player in global maritime governance. He reiterated Qatar's aim to nurture collaborative relations between the IMO and its member states for the enhancement of international maritime navigation and transport.

Through this new term on the IMO Executive Council, Qatar is set to deepen its involvement in specialized United Nations organizations. This accomplishment is in line with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030, which seeks to cultivate a diverse and sustainable economy. Qatar's ongoing initiatives to evolve its maritime sector illustrate its resolve to make a constructive impact on global shipping and marine conservation.
