Romanian Defence Minister Ionut Mosteanu resigned on Friday after admitting that he provided misleading information about his academic background in his official resume. His decision comes at a time when Romania is strengthening its defence posture amid rising security concerns linked to Russia.
Mosteanu stepped down shortly after Romanian newspaper Libertatea published a report revealing inconsistencies in his qualifications. The investigation showed that the dates of his graduation and the university he claimed to have attended did not match official records. The revelations quickly sparked questions about his credibility, especially as he held a senior position in the country’s defence leadership.
In a public statement announcing his resignation, Mosteanu said he accepted responsibility for the errors in his resume and did not want his personal “mistakes” to overshadow Romania’s national security efforts. He noted that the defence ministry must remain focused on strengthening military preparedness, supporting NATO commitments, and safeguarding the country during a period of heightened tensions with Russia.
He added that Romania’s security should not be compromised by any controversy surrounding his past and that stepping down was the right step to maintain public trust. His departure has triggered discussions within Romanian political circles about the importance of transparency and accountability among high-ranking officials.
The Romanian government is expected to announce an interim defence minister soon, as the country continues to prioritise defence reforms, military modernization, and cooperation with European and NATO partners. The incident has also prompted renewed calls for stricter verification of academic and professional records for all public officials.
Mosteanu’s resignation marks one of the most significant political developments in Romania this month and has added to the ongoing debate about honesty, governance, and national security at a time when regional tensions remain high.
