Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Inaugurates Independence Square and Mosque

Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Inaugurates Independence Square and Mosque

Post by : Maya Rahman

On Tuesday morning, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, formally inaugurated the newly redeveloped Independence Square. This significant occasion followed extensive construction works, including the erection of the Independence Monument and enhancements to the surrounding vicinity, commemorating the UAE's 54th Eid Al Etihad and its independence on December 2, 1971.

At the center of the square, the Ruler unveiled a commemorative plaque detailing the 34-meter tall monument, crowned with a seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven emirates of the UAE. This monument emerges as a vital urban symbol in Sharjah, celebrating the historical and national importance of this landmark site. Four sides of the monument showcase crucial historical milestones relevant to the UAE’s path to independence.

One plaque illustrates that on December 2, 1971, Emirati leaders convened and agreed to establish a unified nation called the United Arab Emirates, signifying the termination of British rule. Another plaque notes the 151 years of British presence, beginning with a treaty signed on January 8, 1820.

A third plaque documents the founding of the Sharjah Civil Air Station on July 22, 1932, and indicates that the British military base departed on December 2, 1971, while the civil facility remained operational. The fourth plaque emphasizes conflicts regarding the British military's presence at the civil air station against established agreements.

After the unveiling, His Highness toured Independence Square, observing two decorative fountains beside the monument that enhance the site’s aesthetic appeal. He also admired the extensive landscaping, green spaces, upgraded pedestrian pathways, and lighting that collectively elevate the square’s overall ambiance.

During his visit, the Ruler was briefed on the refurbishment of neighboring buildings. The redevelopment saw improvements to the facades of 24 structures with architectural upgrades that reflect Sharjah’s unique character. Moreover, 95 commercial signboards were updated to ensure an aesthetically cohesive urban landscape. New lighting systems were also incorporated to accentuate the buildings' features at night.

The revitalization of Independence Square aligns with His Highness's commitment to enhancing urban aesthetics, promoting public spaces, and fostering an environment beneficial for both residents and visitors. This initiative bolsters quality of life, fortifies national identity, and fosters values of unity and growth. Infrastructure enhancements included upgrades to roads, walkways, and parking, improving traffic flow and safety. All lighting poles around the square were also replaced as part of this grand redevelopment effort.

This project forms a part of Sharjah’s broader urban development vision to enhance key areas across the emirate while preserving its heritage and visual identity.

In conjunction with the square's inauguration, Sheikh Dr. Sultan also reopened the renovated Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque adjacent to the square. Originally constructed in 1995, the mosque has been restored in the Fatimid architectural style. His Highness unveiled the plaque marking its reopening and offered prayers in the mosque, observing the key renovation details, such as elevating the two minarets, raising surrounding walls, creating an exterior arcade, and upgrading facilities for worshippers.

These renovations underscore Sharjah's commitment to maintaining and expanding its mosques, ensuring they effectively serve the community, both spiritually and socially. The Ruler was joined by senior officials during the inauguration, underscoring the significance of these developmental efforts for the future of the emirate.
