Sheikh Sultan Leads UOS Board Meeting, Endorses AED 1.36bn Budget

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, presided over the Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday morning, held at his office on campus.

During the opening of the meeting, Sheikh Sultan welcomed the newly appointed board members, while appreciating the outgoing team for their dedication and support towards the university's growth and fulfillment of institutional goals. He underscored his belief in the fresh board’s potential to generate impactful insights and suggestions for future improvements.

The Sheikh celebrated the university’s ongoing success in enhancing its global academic standing and solidifying its reputation. He also outlined strategic initiatives focusing on artificial intelligence, robotics, healthcare training, and innovation. Notably, he commended the university for its resilience in maintainingacademic continuity and ensuring timely graduation amidst regional challenges.

Emphasizing Research and Future Prospects

Sheikh Sultan highlighted the urgent need for advancing research frameworks, modernizing curriculum offerings, and integrating cutting-edge technologies into educational practices. He pointed out the importance of aligning educational outcomes with industry demands, attracting elite academic professionals, fostering partnerships, and nurturing local talent development.

Approval of AED 1.36 Billion Budget and Graduates

The board ratified an operational budget of AED 1.36 billion for the 2026-2027 academic year. Moreover, it sanctioned the graduation of 1,927 students, comprising 1,500 bachelor's degrees, 66 PhDs, 355 master's degrees, and 6 postgraduate diplomas.

New Academic Initiatives and Institutions

The board sanctioned a range of new academic programs, including a PhD in Nursing, PhD in Advanced Diagnostic Sciences and Medical Laboratories, MSc in Nuclear Technology and Radiation Management, MA in Digital Corporate Communication, MA in Digital Media, and BA in Psychology.

The establishment of the University of Sharjah Robotics Centre and plans for the University of Sharjah Innovation Centre in partnership with LG were also approved. Collaborative efforts with e& UAE Innovation Centre were also discussed.

Progress in Academic Growth and Institutional Standards

The board assessed updates regarding the university's EDGE Strategy 2024-2030, the development of the research ecosystem, governance structure, and organizational framework. Furthermore, promotions were granted to 23 faculty members, including 13 professors and 10 associate professors.

A performance report by Chancellor Prof. Esameldin Agamy was also reviewed, highlighting advancements in research, infrastructure, community engagement, and alignment with national development goals.

Accreditation and Expansion Updates

The report revealed significant gains in international rankings and accreditation, marking 49 new accredited programs during the academic year, bringing the total to 158 accredited academic programs.

Discussions also included advancements in healthcare training, student initiatives, and the proposal for a University of Sharjah branch in Egypt.

Attendance and Global Partnerships

The meeting witnessed the presence of senior officials, including representatives from Sharjah governmental entities and distinguished academic leaders from esteemed institutions like MIT, Stanford University, McMaster University, and Universiti Malaya, underscoring the university’s strong international academic affiliations.
