On Friday evening, the shelter-in-place directive for the Northwest Territories' Behchokǫ̀ was revoked after law enforcement apprehended several individuals in connection to a serious shooting event. The precaution was in effect for much of the day as RCMP officers conducted a search for armed individuals believed to be involved in a targeted assault.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), they responded to reports of gunfire and sightings of armed suspects earlier that day. Initially, authorities had estimated that up to six individuals were implicated, prompting a critical incident declaration and a request for residents to stay indoors for their safety.
These emergency procedures led to significant interruptions throughout the community. Schools, local services, and public buildings were secured for several hours as the police carried out their search operations. At Chief Jimmy Bruneau School, students remained indoors long past their typical dismissal time while staff ensured their safety and composure during the police activity. Reports indicated that meals were delivered to students amid the lockdown.
A massive emergency response team was deployed in Behchokǫ̀, incorporating RCMP emergency response teams, canine units, drone support, crime prevention officers, and other personnel. Authorities set up a checkpoint outside the community to aid in locating those connected to the shooting reports.
By Friday night, the RCMP announced that the shelter order had been revoked, having completed their risk assessments. Officials indicated they believed it was now safe for the community to return to regular activities, although police would maintain a visible presence in the area as the investigation continues.
Officials confirmed that multiple arrests were made during the operation, but didn't specify how many suspects were taken into custody or provide detailed information about potential charges. They also did not confirm whether all suspects related to the incident had been captured.
The RCMP indicated no injuries were reported in connection to the event. Investigators presently regard the situation as a targeted attack rather than a random public threat. Nonetheless, police encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or information related to the investigation.
The incident raised alarm across the Northwest Territories, particularly as Behchokǫ̀ is among the larger Indigenous communities in the region. Residents spent anxious hours awaiting updates as heavily armed officers carried out the search. Local leaders and residents later expressed gratitude towards the emergency responders and school staff for their efforts in safeguarding the community during the lockdown.
The investigation remains active, with police stating that further details may emerge in the coming days as they analyze evidence and speak with witnesses involved in the case.
