Shubman Gill Excluded from T20 World Cup, Set to Lead Punjab in Vijay Hazare Trophy

Shubman Gill Excluded from T20 World Cup, Set to Lead Punjab in Vijay Hazare Trophy

Post by : Meena Ariff

Shubman Gill, the captain of India’s ODI and Test teams, faces an unexpected challenge as he is not included in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2026. The 25-year-old batsman’s omission comes after a tough spell in T20 internationals, where he managed only 291 runs in 15 innings without a fifty since the last few months.

However, Gill is gearing up for a robust revival in the domestic circuit. He will captain Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier List A cricket tournament, set to kick off on December 24. This event serves as a critical opportunity for him to showcase his talent and win back the selectors’ favor ahead of India’s international matches in January.

Along with Gill, Arshdeep Singh and Abhishek Sharma are also part of Punjab’s team, though their participation might be affected by India's packed cricket schedule. The national team is set to engage in a three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11, followed by a five-match T20I series commencing January 21.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has stipulated that centrally contracted players must participate in domestic cricket before the next international tour. As such, Gill is anticipated to play a pivotal role in the Vijay Hazare Trophy leading up to the ODI series.

Punjab’s squad boasts a strong lineup of batsmen and all-rounders, including Prabhsimran Singh, Anmolpreet Singh, and Harpreet Brar. They will compete in their group against teams like Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Goa, and Mumbai. The league stage will conclude on January 8, just ahead of India’s international fixtures.

For Shubman Gill, the Vijay Hazare Trophy is more than a mere tournament; it presents a vital chance to regain his spot in India’s white-ball teams while reinforcing his potential as a future leader across formats.
