A Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) officer has been arrested for allegedly trespassing into the Chinese Embassy premises in Tokyo, triggering diplomatic concern and calls for a thorough investigation from Beijing.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old second lieutenant Kodai Murata, is stationed at the GSDF’s Ebino Garrison in Miyazaki Prefecture. According to Tokyo Metropolitan Police, he entered the embassy grounds in the Moto-Azabu area of Minato Ward on Tuesday morning and was restrained by embassy staff before being taken into custody later that night.
During questioning, Murata reportedly admitted to the act, stating that he intended to meet the Chinese ambassador to urge restraint in remarks toward Japan. He also told investigators that he had considered taking his own life if his request was rejected, in an attempt to create shock.
Police recovered a knife-like object with an approximately 18-centimeter blade from the embassy premises, believed to have been brought by the suspect. No injuries were reported among embassy personnel.
Investigations revealed that Murata had traveled from his base to Tokyo via bus and Shinkansen, stayed at an internet café, and purchased the knife locally. Authorities believe he gained access to the embassy by scaling a fence from a nearby building.
China reacted strongly to the incident, with its Foreign Ministry lodging formal protests and calling it a serious threat to the safety of diplomatic staff and facilities. Beijing has demanded that Japan conduct a full investigation and take appropriate action against those responsible.
Japanese authorities are continuing their probe into the incident, including security lapses and the suspect’s motives, as the case raises concerns over diplomatic security and bilateral tensions.
