SpaceX shares fell more than 6% on Thursday as the strong rally that followed the company's historic stock market debut started to lose momentum. Investors appeared to take profits after several days of rapid gains that pushed the company into the ranks of the world's most valuable businesses.
Stock Remains Above Listing Price
Despite the decline, SpaceX shares continue to trade significantly above their initial public offering price of $135. The stock was trading around $178.50, still representing gains of more than 30% since its Nasdaq debut. However, the recent pullback wiped billions of dollars from the company's market value.
Investors Reassess Valuation
Market analysts said the decline was not unexpected given the size and attention surrounding the IPO. Investors are now closely examining whether SpaceX's massive valuation can be justified by its future growth plans, particularly its increasing focus on artificial intelligence and enterprise technology markets.

AI Expansion Raises Questions
Earlier this week, SpaceX announced plans to acquire AI startup Anysphere, the company behind the popular coding assistant Cursor, in a stock deal valued at $60 billion. The acquisition is aimed at strengthening SpaceX's position in the rapidly growing AI sector, but it also raises questions about future spending and profitability.
Space Sector Stocks Also Decline
The weakness was not limited to SpaceX. Shares of several other U.S. space companies also moved lower, reflecting broader caution among investors. Analysts noted that enthusiasm surrounding the space sector has cooled slightly as traders evaluate long-term earnings potential and market risks.
Retail Buying Activity Slows
Data showed that retail investors aggressively purchased SpaceX shares during the first few trading sessions. However, buying activity slowed considerably on Thursday, suggesting that the initial excitement surrounding the IPO may be easing as investors adopt a more cautious approach.
Funding Plans Remain in Focus
Reports indicate that SpaceX is preparing discussions with investors regarding a potential bond offering worth at least $20 billion. The additional funding could help finance the company's ambitious AI projects and future expansion plans as it seeks to diversify beyond its traditional aerospace operations.
