On Tuesday (December 16, 2025), a landmark agreement was signed as India and Ethiopia upgraded their bilateral ties to a strategic partnership. Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Abiy Ahmed Ali explored new avenues for collaboration across several domains, including economy, technology, defense, health, and education.
During their momentous discussions, PM Modi announced a doubling of scholarships for Ethiopian students pursuing education in India, while also recognizing Ethiopia’s vital role in supporting India’s fight against terrorism.
PM Ali pointed out that India is Ethiopia's largest investor, with over 615 Indian firms currently operating in the nation. Both leaders underscored common goals and South-South cooperation, highlighting the partnership's potential to unlock fresh opportunities for both countries.
PM Modi also embraced Ethiopian culture by participating in a traditional coffee ceremony and visiting Friendship Park and the Science Museum, receiving a heartfelt welcome from the Indian community in Addis Ababa.
On December 17, PM Modi is set to address Ethiopia's Parliament, presenting his thoughts on the significance of the India-Ethiopia partnership within the context of the Global South. This visit is part of his tour that also includes stops in Jordan and Oman.
