Rawalpindi Enforces Section 144 Amid Rising Tensions Around Imran Khan

Rawalpindi Enforces Section 144 Amid Rising Tensions Around Imran Khan

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In response to escalating concerns regarding the health of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the Rawalpindi administration has implemented Section 144 across the district for a duration of three days. This directive, issued by Deputy Commissioner Dr Hassan Waqar Cheema, is effective from December 1 to 3, prohibiting public gatherings and limiting various activities to maintain order.

The initiative aligns with plans from Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to stage demonstrations advocating for access to their imprisoned leader. Imran Khan has been incarcerated at Adiala Jail since August 2023 after facing multiple convictions he alleges are politically charged. His family claims they have not been permitted to visit him for over a month.

As per the order, assemblies, rallies, and gatherings involving five or more individuals are banned. The regulations also include prohibitions on carrying weapons, batons, sling shots, or any potentially harmful items. Additionally, displaying arms, delivering hate speeches, and using loudspeakers are restricted. Attempts to breach police barriers or disrupt traffic control are also cautioned against.

Officials state this preemptive action follows intelligence warnings indicating that certain groups plan to mobilize for significant gatherings, potentially targeting sensitive areas. The administration insists that these measures are vital for public safety and to avert any disruption of peace.

In the meantime, Imran Khan's sons have escalated their calls for verification of their father's welfare. Speaking to Reuters, Kasim Khan expressed concerns, stating they have received no authentic communication for months, despite a court ruling permitting weekly visits. He characterized their situation as “psychological torture,” worrying that serious issues regarding their father's health may be concealed. He emphasized the absence of any verifiable updates.

The uncertainty surrounding Khan's health, combined with stricter security measures in Rawalpindi, has heightened the already charged political environment, spurring PTI supporters to demand transparency and access to the former prime minister under these increased restrictions.
