Thailand and Vietnam have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defence and security cooperation during high-level meetings held in Hanoi as part of the official visit of the Thai Prime Minister and delegation to Vietnam. The discussions highlighted the growing strategic trust between the two nations and their shared vision of maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity across the ASEAN region.
The defence dialogue took place on June 8 between Thailand’s Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Adul Bunthamcharoen, senior Thai military leaders, and Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, General Phan Van Giang. The meeting reflected the close relationship that has continued to develop under the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
Both sides welcomed the steady progress achieved through military cooperation over recent years. The discussions covered a broad range of activities including high-level exchanges, military education and training programs, intelligence sharing, and enhanced cooperation among the armed forces. Maritime security remained a major focus, with both countries emphasizing the importance of joint efforts in humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and combating transnational crime.
The two defence ministries also explored ways to address emerging security challenges. Cybersecurity, defence industry cooperation, military technology development, and innovation were identified as key areas for future collaboration. Officials agreed that closer coordination would strengthen the readiness and capabilities of both nations in responding to modern security threats.
Another important topic was the promotion of the 2+2 cooperation mechanism involving the foreign and defence ministers of both countries. Thailand expressed its readiness to support the initiative, viewing it as an effective platform for expanding strategic dialogue and deepening bilateral security relations.
Thailand also invited Vietnam to participate in the ASEAN–Republic of Korea Defence Industry Cooperation Conference and THAIDEF-EX 2026, scheduled to take place in Thailand later this year. The invitation reflects both countries’ commitment to encouraging regional cooperation, defence innovation, and stronger partnerships among ASEAN member states.
Officials described the defence meeting as a significant complement to the leaders’ summit discussions. The dialogue demonstrated a shared determination to build mutual trust, strengthen security cooperation across multiple sectors, and contribute to long-term stability and sustainable development throughout Southeast Asia.
