Ten Foods to Restore Liver Health Recommended by Harvard and AIIMS Specialist

Ten Foods to Restore Liver Health Recommended by Harvard and AIIMS Specialist

Post by : Saif Rahman

Increasingly, fatty liver disease is affecting individuals, even in their youth. With the demands of modern work and the prevalence of fast food, many neglect their dietary choices, which can adversely affect the liver, a vital organ that cleanses blood, aids digestion, and stores energy. Accumulation of excess fat in the liver can lead to serious health issues. Fortunately, modifications in diet can significantly ameliorate this condition.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi, an esteemed gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS and Harvard, shared a list on social media detailing ten foods that can support liver healing and protection. He emphasized that selecting the right foods can help reduce inflammation, dispel toxins, and lower fat accumulation in the liver, asserting that good nutrition serves as a key component of healing.

His first recommendation is extra virgin olive oil, rich in healthy fats and antioxidants that safeguard liver function and regulate blood sugar levels. This versatile oil can enhance both cooked dishes and salads. Following this are berries, such as blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries, packed with antioxidants vital for protecting liver cells.

Avocados come next, known for their healthy fats and fiber that assist in detoxification and cholesterol reduction. A daily handful of walnuts provides omega-3 fatty acids, known for their anti-inflammatory effects on the liver. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower contribute to the body's detox process.

Oats also make the list due to their fiber content, aiding digestion and preventing excess fat build-up. Daily consumption of green tea has shown a reduction in liver inflammation, while coffee has been linked to lower liver enzyme levels and a protective effect against fatty liver disease, bringing good news for coffee lovers.

For protein intake, Dr. Sethi advocates plant-based options such as tofu or tempeh over red meat, as these choices are gentler on the liver. The final food he mentions is garlic, known for activating liver enzymes that facilitate detoxification and enhance fat metabolism.

Dr. Sethi’s insights highlight that incremental dietary changes can lead to significant improvements. The health of the liver is not solely reliant on medication but also on lifestyle choices. Maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, and minimizing sugary and fried foods can aid in the liver's rehabilitation. Experts also emphasize the importance of moderating alcohol intake and managing weight.

It’s essential for individuals to recognize that health conditions vary from person to person. Anyone seeking to adopt these lifestyle changes should consult a healthcare professional, especially if they have pre-existing medical issues. Ultimately, opting for natural, fresh, and minimally processed foods contributes to long-lasting liver health.

This serves as a reminder that the liver works diligently every day, and it’s our duty to care for it. Choosing healthier food options is one of the most effective ways to safeguard our health for a lifetime.
