Typhoon Kalmaegi has caused extensive destruction across the Philippines and Vietnam, leading to more than 190 fatalities and numerous individuals reported missing as it moves westward towards Cambodia and Laos. This powerful storm has unleashed harsh winds, heavy rain, and severe flooding, marking its place among the most catastrophic storms in the region this year.
In the Philippines, the confirmed death toll stands at 188, with 135 individuals unaccounted for due to flash floods and landslides that engulfed entire homes and communities under mud. Major destruction has occurred in central regions like Cebu and Talisay City, where residents recall shocking scenes of devastation.
Those who evacuated to higher ground could only watch as floodwaters swept away houses and belongings. Mely Saberon, a resident of Talisay City, lamented, “Our home is gone. We lost everything. Though we’ve faced many storms, none compares to this one.”
The Philippine government has officially declared a nationwide state of calamity and mobilized rescue teams in response to the extensive damage. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr proclaimed a state of emergency while authorities prepare for another potential storm that is forming in the Pacific.
In Vietnam, the storm hit land late Thursday with winds reaching 149 km/h (92 mph). The death toll currently stands at five, with numerous injuries and thousands displaced. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh convened an online meeting to coordinate emergency response efforts, emphasizing the need for immediate assistance. “Every individual must have access to food, drink, and basic necessities. We cannot allow anyone to suffer from hunger or cold,” he asserted.
The storm's impact has been especially notable along Vietnam’s central coast, where relentless winds uprooted trees, tore off roofs, and shattered windows. In Dak Lak province, residents issued urgent calls for help as homes crumbled beneath heavy rainfall and flooding. Thousands have sought shelter in schools and public facilities, with over 260,000 military personnel deployed to assist in relief operations.
Authorities are warning about additional flooding risks in vulnerable areas, as central Vietnam has already dealt with unprecedented rainfall that caused 50 fatalities prior to Kalmaegi’s onslaught. Airports and highways have been temporarily closed, and hundreds of thousands evacuated as a safety measure.
Locally named Tino in Vietnam, the typhoon released a month’s worth of rain in just one day, exacerbating the crisis. In towns like Quy Nhon and Gia Lai, debris and fallen trees obstructed roads, while extensive power outages left many without electricity.
As Typhoon Kalmaegi progresses toward Cambodia and Laos, authorities remain vigilant, preparing for possible flooding and landslides. Rescue and recovery operations are currently underway, but disrupted communications in several areas make it difficult to fully assess the extent of the tragedy.
With infrastructure devastated, homes destroyed, and families displaced, Southeast Asia now faces the monumental task of recovery and rebuilding following one of the deadliest storms in recent history.
