Trump Warns Japan Not to Provoke China Over Taiwan Dispute

Trump Warns Japan Not to Provoke China Over Taiwan Dispute

Post by : Rameen Ariff

TOKYO — United States President Donald Trump has advised Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi not to provoke China over Taiwan’s sovereignty following a recent diplomatic row between Tokyo and Beijing.

The dispute started after Takaichi stated that Japan could intervene militarily if Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by China, were attacked. Beijing responded angrily, summoning Japan’s ambassador and warning Chinese citizens against traveling to Japan, citing safety concerns.

In a phone call with Trump on Monday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping emphasized that Taiwan’s return is “an integral part of the post-war international order.” Following this, Trump spoke with Takaichi, advising her to avoid provocative remarks while maintaining diplomatic relations. Officials said Trump’s advice was subtle and not a direct pressure to retract her statement.

Takaichi confirmed that she and Trump discussed the call between Trump and Xi, as well as broader US-Japan relations. She said Trump offered his support and invited her to reach out to him anytime. Japanese officials, however, described the situation as concerning, given the sensitive balance in regional diplomacy.

The tensions highlight ongoing challenges in Asia, as both Japan and China navigate issues related to Taiwan. While Beijing warned of potential risks to Chinese citizens in Japan, Japan’s foreign ministry said crime reports remain low, disputing claims of increased incidents.

This development comes amid ongoing efforts by the US and China to maintain a diplomatic balance in the region, particularly concerning trade agreements and agricultural deals.
