On Monday, US President Donald Trump conveyed his belief that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy desire to conclude the ongoing war in Ukraine. Speaking from the White House, Trump noted that diplomatic discussions are taking place and expressed optimism that these efforts could culminate in a peaceful resolution.
Trump suggested that Putin is feeling pressure and is interested in peace. He added that Ukraine is equally keen to resolve the conflict, highlighting ongoing dialogues between both parties. "I believe he (Putin) feels the pressure. He wants this to end, and Ukraine shares that sentiment, and we’re in the midst of talks that could lead to closure," Trump stated.
The president indicated that the peace negotiations are more advanced than widely believed. Although he didn’t specify a timeline for a potential deal, Trump suggested that recent diplomatic efforts are yielding positive results.
According to Trump, crucial progress is transpiring behind the scenes, more substantial than public perception suggests. He expressed encouragement about the current discussions and remains hopeful for an eventual agreement. "We are closer than most realize," he remarked. "President Putin eagerly wants a resolution. I can state that emphatically, and President Zelenskyy is eager for an end as well."
His comments reflect his belief that both Moscow and Kyiv are keen on resolving the conflict through negotiation.
Trump also reaffirmed that the situation in Ukraine will be a significant agenda item during this week’s NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.
He indicated that discussions will include updates on the conflict and the ongoing diplomatic initiatives. "We’ll be attending NATO meetings to discuss it," he concluded.
