In a recent statement, US President Donald Trump praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to him as “a great man” and confirming that trade negotiations between the United States and India are “going good.” He indicated the possibility of visiting India in 2026, reinforcing the growing partnership between the two nations.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump highlighted the positive trajectory of discussions for a major trade agreement with New Delhi. He expressed his admiration for Modi, identifying him as “a friend” and emphasizing India’s choice to “largely stop buying oil from Russia,” a point he has reiterated frequently in recent weeks.
Previously, Trump had imposed a significant 50% tariff on goods from India, including a 25% tariff on Russian oil and arms purchases, suggesting these transactions indirectly aided Moscow’s military efforts. Conversely, India has rebutted these accusations, asserting that its oil imports are dictated by considerations of national interest and affordability.
The US and India are working on a broad trade deal designed to amplify cooperation in technology, energy, and defense sectors. Trump stated that the countries are “collaborating like never before,” adding, “Prime Minister Modi is a great man, and I will be going [to India]. We’ll sort that out soon.”
While specific dates weren’t disclosed, Trump hinted that his visit might occur in 2026. His comments arise amid speculation about his attendance at the forthcoming Quad Summit, which India will host later this year. The Quad, comprising the US, India, Japan, and Australia, aims to bolster regional stability and economic growth in the Indo-Pacific.
Notably, despite Trump’s assertions regarding reduced Russian oil imports, recent data shows a slight uptick in India’s imports in October. India continues to be the second-largest buyer of Russian crude after China. In 2024, nearly 40% of India’s oil imports were from Russia, up significantly from just 3% in 2021.
The Indian government has stood by its energy purchases, emphasizing the necessity for affordable energy to support its vast population. Officials argue that as a developing nation, prioritizing domestic welfare while managing global diplomatic ties is essential.
Furthermore, Washington has been urging New Delhi to boost its imports of American oil and gas. A representative from India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed that discussions are ongoing to enhance energy collaboration and broaden India’s import options.
Though relations have been strained over the Russian oil imports, recent developments indicate a renewed spirit of cooperation. Trump has remarked on the frequent dialogue he shares with Modi, showcasing mutual respect and a shared vision for enhancing bilateral relations.
In 2024, the United States was India’s leading trading partner, with bilateral trade nearing $190 billion. Both leaders aspire to more than double this figure to $500 billion in the forthcoming years, a goal considered achievable if the negotiations for the forthcoming trade deal succeed.
As Trump’s potential trip to India attracts attention, global analysts perceive it as a significant step towards redefining India-US relations, indicating a deeper strategic partnership between the two democracies.
