In a statement made on Friday evening, US President Donald Trump expressed that Iran is keen on reaching an agreement with the United States. He noted that discussions were temporarily halted to accommodate funeral processions in Tehran following the passing of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Trump delivered these comments during a speech at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, celebrating America 250, an event commemorating the 250th anniversary of US independence. While addressing the audience, he emphasized the might of the US military and reflected on significant moments from American history.
During the event, Trump lauded the American armed forces, asserting that the United States has developed the most formidable military globally.
"We built the strongest and most powerful military. We triumphed in two world wars," Trump stated. Additionally, he claimed that the Cold War had significantly diminished America's adversaries.
In discussing ongoing international tensions, Trump brought Iran and Venezuela into the conversation.
"We handled Venezuela swiftly, and we dealt Iran a significant blow; they are eager to resolve the matter. We paused for a funeral because we are considerate," he remarked.
Trump indicated that the US postponed negotiations with Tehran by one week to facilitate the funeral ceremonies.
Trump also discussed the importance of celebrating the country's 250th milestone.
He referred to the United States as "the oldest republic on Earth" and proclaimed it to be populated by "the freest people on the planet" with "the most just and lasting constitution on Earth."
Additionally, he asserted that Americans have contributed the most globally to humanitarian efforts, battling hunger, curing diseases, and enhancing the quality of life.
Shifting to domestic challenges, Trump raised alarms about what he considered an increasing ideological threat within the United States.
"There's a rise in the communist threat in our nation, even from new arrivals who adopt ideas that oppose our values and success," he warned.
Trump labeled communism as "an existential danger to American freedom," asserting it as a more significant risk than historical events like World War One, World War Two, Pearl Harbor, or even 9/11.
In closing, Trump expressed confidence that the United States would not embrace communism, before addressing the upcoming midterm elections.
"We can only fail in the midterms if we allow it to happen," he stated.
He suggested that abolishing the filibuster and advancing the "Save America Act" would secure Republican victories for a century.
