Taiwan’s most important chipmaking company, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), is at the center of a serious investigation. On Tuesday, authorities in Taiwan confirmed that three people have been detained after the company raised concerns about a suspected leak of trade secrets. These secrets are connected to a very important and sensitive technology, possibly part of what Taiwan considers its national core technology.
What is TSMC and why is it Important?
TSMC is one of the world’s most advanced and powerful semiconductor companies. It makes computer chips that are used in all kinds of devices — smartphones, computers, cars, and even in artificial intelligence tools. Some of the biggest tech companies in the world, like Apple and Nvidia, rely on TSMC to build their chips.
Recently, TSMC signed a big deal to produce 300,000 H20 chipsets for Nvidia, showing just how important and trusted the company is in the global technology world.
But now, TSMC is facing a serious problem at home.
How the Leak Was Discovered
In July, TSMC’s internal systems noticed strange activity. Someone was accessing personnel files that normally wouldn't need to be viewed. These internal files are meant to be protected and secure. This led the company to launch an internal investigation.
TSMC quickly informed Taiwan's High Prosecutors' Office, which has a special branch for intellectual property cases. This branch deals with crimes involving stolen ideas, secret inventions, and other types of technology theft.
After questioning witnesses, examining digital records, and collecting more evidence, prosecutors found strong signs that three people were involved — one who had worked at TSMC in the past and two current employees. All three were detained for further questioning.
Suspected Violation of National Security
This is not just a case of breaking company rules. Authorities believe the leak may be a serious violation of Taiwan’s National Security Act. That’s because the technology that may have been leaked is believed to be part of Taiwan’s national core technology. This kind of technology is very important for the country’s economic strength and global leadership in tech.
If proven, this case could lead to harsh penalties under national security laws.
What Technology Was Involved?
TSMC did not say exactly what kind of technology might have been leaked. However, experts believe it could be related to TSMC’s 2-nanometer chip technology. This is the most advanced and powerful chip technology in the world right now.
A nanometer is a unit of measure that is thousands of times smaller than a hair strand, and in chipmaking, the smaller the number, the more advanced and efficient the chip. TSMC’s 2-nanometer technology is not only small and powerful, but also saves more energy, which is important for devices like smartphones and laptops.
TSMC Responds
TSMC released a statement to say that it had taken strong internal actions against the employees involved in the suspected leak. They have also promised full support to the legal investigation.
“As the case is now under judicial review, we are unable to provide further details at this time,” the company said in its statement.
Although the company stayed quiet on the details of the technology involved, its quick action shows how seriously it considers the situation.
Why This Matters for Taiwan and the World
Taiwan is a world leader in chip manufacturing, and TSMC is the crown jewel of the industry. Countries around the world — from the United States to Japan — depend on chips made in Taiwan. A leak of key technology from TSMC is not just a company problem — it could affect global supply chains, international tech development, and economic competition.
It also highlights the growing concern about intellectual property theft, especially in the technology world, where even a small piece of leaked information can lead to big losses.
Protecting Innovation in the Future
This case is a warning sign for tech companies everywhere. As technology becomes more advanced and valuable, so do the risks of it being stolen or misused. Companies need to:
For Taiwan, this case also shows the need to guard its national technological secrets, not just with strong laws but also with careful systems inside companies.
What Happens Next?
The case is now under full legal investigation, and the three people who were detained will face questioning. If they are found guilty of breaking the law, they could face serious punishment under Taiwan’s National Security Act.
Meanwhile, TSMC will continue working to secure its systems and regain full control over its sensitive data.
