An Air India aircraft en route from Phuket to Delhi met with significant turbulence on Tuesday, resulting in minor injuries to several passengers and crew members. Fortunately, the flight safely landed at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi around 8:30 a.m. on August 4, 2026.
The flight, identified as AI2379, encountered unexpected turbulence during its journey. Air India confirmed that the pilot successfully executed the landing in Delhi, with all passengers and crew making it off the aircraft without major incidents.
After landing, those injured were seen receiving help in wheelchairs prior to being transported by ambulances for medical care. Some individuals were noted with bandages on their foreheads, arms, and necks.
Injured parties were sent to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj, and the Spine Injury Centre for assessment and treatment.
Although the official count of injuries remains unverified, early reports suggest approximately 12 passengers were hurt during the turbulence.
One passenger recounted that the aircraft had been aloft for around an hour and a half when sudden turbulence hit. Many aboard were reportedly asleep at the time when significant shaking occurred for roughly two to three minutes.
The passenger estimated that between 15 to 20 individuals were injured in total, with over 100 people onboard, and suggested that about 70% to 80% of the passengers may have faced some injuries. Nonetheless, they acknowledged the total number of those injured might not be final, as investigations continue.
An Air India spokesperson stated that flight AI2379 experienced a brief turbulence episode on August 4, prompting abrupt altitude changes.
The spokesperson reiterated that pilots landed the aircraft without incident and that all passengers and crew exited the flight safely. Furthermore, they noted that no severe injuries had occurred.
Air India confirmed that multiple passengers and crew members sustained minor injuries and received precautionary assessments and treatments from the airline's medical staff at the airport.
Prioritizing the safety of everyone on board, Air India assured that necessary support is being extended to affected individuals and that the airline is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
