Turkey’s Transport Minister, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, faced public criticism after posting a video of himself driving at 225 km/h on a highway, almost twice the legal speed limit. The video, which included folk music and clips of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan praising the government’s infrastructure projects, showed the minister’s car moving rapidly past other vehicles on the Ankara–Nigde motorway.

Video Sparks Social Media Backlash

The video quickly went viral on social media, with many users mocking the minister for breaking the law while in a position responsible for public safety and transport regulations. In the clip, the minister’s speedometer clearly showed him exceeding the maximum legal speed of 140 km/h. Traffic Police Issue a Fine

Following the public backlash, Turkish traffic police issued a speeding ticket to Minister Uraloglu. The fine amounted to 9,267 lira (approximately S$290) for breaking the speed limit about 50 kilometers outside the capital, Ankara. This incident occurred despite the ministry’s responsibility to enforce traffic rules and ensure the safety of drivers on the road.

Minister Issues Public Apology

After receiving the fine, Minister Uraloglu shared a photo of the ticket on the social media platform X, writing a brief apology to the public. His statement read: “Apologies to our nation.” The apology was widely discussed online, with some expressing appreciation for his acknowledgment, while others criticized the incident as careless behavior unbefitting a senior government official.

Highway Speed Limits and Road Safety in Turkey

Turkey’s highways have a maximum speed limit of 140 km/h. Exceeding this limit significantly increases the risk of accidents. Official data from 2024 show that 6,351 people lost their lives in nearly 1.5 million road accidents across the country. Traffic authorities emphasize that speeding remains one of the main causes of road accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
