UAE Advocates for Enhanced GCC-US Collaboration on Security

UAE Advocates for Enhanced GCC-US Collaboration on Security

Post by : Badri Ariffin

The United Arab Emirates has underscored the necessity of tighter cooperation between Gulf nations and the United States to enhance regional security, ensure safe maritime routes, and back peace initiatives throughout the Middle East.

Lana Nusseibeh, Minister of State, represented H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan during the Joint Ministerial Meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the US.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Abdullatif Al Zayani, Foreign Minister of Bahrain, the current rotating presidency holder of the GCC, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading the US delegation.

Discussion on Regional Issues and Iran

Ministers at the meeting assessed the latest regional developments, particularly addressing Iran's antagonistic actions against GCC member states and its illegal blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

The participants welcomed the recent US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, viewing it as a crucial initial step towards minimizing tensions and fostering regional de-escalation.

The session reiterated the United States' enduring commitment to the safety of GCC countries, highlighted the significance of the US-GCC Strategic Partnership, and sought paths for enhancing regional stability.

Importance of Gulf Engagement Stressed by UAE

Lana Nusseibeh emphasized the critical nature of continuous dialogue between the United States and Gulf allies. She noted, "Ongoing Gulf consultation and inclusion are essential moving forward. Our countries are affected by Iran's aggressive actions, and any sustainable solution must take into account the viewpoints of those most directly impacted."

UAE Advocates for Strait of Hormuz Protection

Nusseibeh reiterated that international laws and free navigation must be upheld, ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open and safeguarded against economic coercion.

She asserted that actions jeopardizing maritime security and obstructing global trade flow are tantamount to acts of piracy, posing a fundamental threat to regional stability and global energy security.

She urged that the international community must not permit Iran to profit from its unlawful conduct in the Strait of Hormuz.

Support for Lebanon and Syria Highlighted

On the topic of Lebanon, Nusseibeh stressed the significance of advocating for the Lebanese Government, Armed Forces, and citizens as they strive for security, stability, and development.

She also emphasized the necessity for supporting Syria's political transition, encouraging global institutions and the private sector to aid in the nation's reconstruction, reaffirming the UAE's solidarity with the Syrian populace, and backing initiatives that foster peaceful coexistence and development.

UAE's Position on Two-State Solution Reinforced

Regarding the situation in Palestinian territories, Nusseibeh urged for the thorough execution of Security Council Resolution 2803 and support for the Peace Board in Gaza.

She reiterated the UAE's long-held stance that a viable political framework is essential to resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict through a two-state approach, empowering the Palestinian people to establish a sovereign and independent state.
