Unique Ant Species Found in Sharjah's Hajar Mountains

Unique Ant Species Found in Sharjah's Hajar Mountains

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a significant natural revelation, the Hajar Mountains of Sharjah have unveiled a stunning discovery. Researchers from the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) have identified a rare ant species, dubbed Carebara Sharjahensis—also known as the “Sharjah Ant.” This remarkable find marks the first documentation of the Carebara genus in the UAE and stands as the third recognized species of its type in the entire Arabian Peninsula.

The discovery originated from meticulous field investigations in Wadi Shees, led by Professor Dr. Mustafa Sharaf from EPAA’s Al Dhaid Wildlife Center. Despite numerous attempts, only a solitary “soldier” ant was found, indicating that this species adapts to highly specialized underground environments, thus making it exceptionally difficult to locate.

Specialists emphasize that the Sharjah Ant showcases unique characteristics that distinguish it from other known species. It features prominent lateral horns on both sides of its head, fine sensory hairs, a consistent yellow body color, and distinct anatomical attributes in its head and thorax. Intriguingly, it shares some similarities with a species found in Zimbabwe, yet enough differences exist to classify it uniquely.

This groundbreaking discovery reflects Sharjah’s dedication to researching biodiversity and environmental oversight. The Hajar Mountains, known for being one of the UAE’s richest ecological zones, continue to unveil rare and endemic species, thereby enhancing the emirate’s natural heritage. Ongoing research endeavors aim to uncover additional colony members—queens, males, and workers—that are presumed to exist in subterranean habitats and among decaying organic materials.

This exceptional finding not only accentuates the ecological importance of the Hajar Mountains but also positions Sharjah as an emerging center for specialized scientific research in the region.
