The United States has accused China of trying to discourage American states and private businesses from building stronger relationships with Taiwan. According to newly released letters from the US Departments of State, Commerce and Agriculture, Chinese officials have allegedly contacted local governments and companies in an effort to influence their engagement with Taiwan.
US Departments Issue Joint Letters
The letters, dated June 16 and released by the American Institute in Taiwan, claim that China's embassy and consulates regularly approach US state offices and business leaders. The US government alleges that these communications often misrepresent Washington's official policy on Taiwan and attempt to discourage economic and trade cooperation with the island.
Businesses Asked to Report Pressure
US authorities advised governors, CEOs and business leaders to contact the State Department if they receive pressure from Chinese officials regarding Taiwan-related activities. The letters emphasize that stronger economic, agricultural and commercial partnerships with Taiwan remain consistent with US policy.
Taiwan Welcomes US Support
Taiwan's Foreign Ministry welcomed the letters, saying they demonstrate Washington's commitment to expanding cooperation despite increasing pressure from Beijing. Officials added that Taiwan remains an important partner in global trade and technology, with long-standing business ties to American states and companies.

China Yet to Respond
China's Foreign Ministry did not immediately comment on the allegations. Beijing continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory and strongly opposes official engagement between Taiwan and foreign governments. Meanwhile, the United States maintains its long-standing "One China" policy while continuing unofficial relations with Taiwan.
Taiwan's Role in Global Economy
The letters highlight Taiwan's importance in global supply chains, particularly in advanced technology and semiconductor manufacturing. US officials say expanding cooperation with Taiwan benefits both economies and supports long-term commercial partnerships.
Growing Diplomatic Competition
The latest exchange reflects ongoing strategic competition between Washington and Beijing over Taiwan. While the US encourages stronger economic engagement, China continues to oppose international recognition or official interactions involving the self-governed island.
