The Venezuelan government has rescinded the operational rights of six prominent international airlines, further straining relations with the United States and complicating air travel to the nation. The airlines affected include Iberia, TAP, Avianca, Latam Colombia, Turkish Airlines, and Gol.
This decision follows the airlines’ suspension of flights to Venezuela, triggered by a warning from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding a “potentially hazardous situation” in the country’s airspace. The FAA cited an escalating security situation and increased military activity in the vicinity.
In retaliation, Venezuela accused the airlines of engaging in “state terrorism actions promoted by the United States” by ceasing flights without government consent, asserting that the U.S. agency lacks authority over its airspace.
President Nicolas Maduro has been vocal about his opposition to U.S. military presence in the Caribbean, which has been reinforced due to concerns about Venezuela’s alleged involvement in drug trafficking. Maduro has refuted these claims, attributing them to a U.S. strategy aimed at toppling his government.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had issued a warning to airlines to resume operations within 48 hours, cautioning that failure to comply could lead to the forfeiture of their rights in Venezuela. Many airlines did not heed this directive, leading to the Venezuelan government's decisive action.
Some of the affected airlines, like Iberia, have expressed a desire to return to service once safety conditions are guaranteed. Although Air Europa and Plus Ultra also halted flights, their operating permits were not revoked. Meanwhile, carriers such as Copa and Wingo are still providing service, alongside domestic flights to Colombia, Panama, and Curaçao.
This cancellation of airline permits not only deepens Venezuela’s isolation but also complicates travel for residents and international travelers alike. It underscores the escalating tension between Caracas and Washington, carrying potential ramifications for both countries' economies and their aviation sectors.
As developments unfold, passengers and airlines will have to navigate the complexities of air travel safety and international relations in the region.
