Panic erupted at Croatia’s Split Airport after a Croatia Airlines Airbus A220-300 reportedly skidded off the runway during an aborted takeoff while preparing for a flight to Frankfurt.
According to reports, the aircraft veered off the runway and entered a grassy area moments after the takeoff attempt was halted. Videos shared online captured frightened passengers screaming inside the cabin as the plane lost alignment on the runway.
Airport authorities confirmed that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft shortly after the incident. No injuries or casualties were reported.
Officials stated that the aircraft struck several runway lights and markers before finally coming to a stop. Emergency response teams quickly arrived at the scene and secured the area while airport staff assisted passengers.
Operations at Split Airport were temporarily disrupted as emergency crews inspected the runway and began recovery procedures. Some flights reportedly experienced delays during the response operation.
Initial reports suggest the incident happened during an aborted takeoff procedure, though the exact reason behind the runway excursion remains under investigation. Aviation authorities are expected to examine technical data, runway conditions and pilot communications.
The Airbus A220-300 involved in the incident sustained visible external damage near the landing gear area, according to images circulating online. Croatia Airlines has not yet released detailed information regarding the condition of the aircraft.
The incident has drawn attention across social media due to the dramatic footage recorded by passengers during the frightening moments onboard. Authorities emphasized that swift emergency action helped avoid a more serious aviation disaster.
