Gabon Offshore Rig Accident: Borr Drilling Update

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

An offshore drilling rig sank near Mayumba, Gabon, on October 24, 2026, while preparations were underway for a planned drilling campaign. The incident involved the Prospector 5 rig, a jack-up drilling unit owned and operated by Borr Drilling and contracted to support offshore operations for BW Energy. There were 115 people on board when the incident occurred. Initial company updates indicated that 110 people had been accounted for, while five were reported missing. Reuters subsequently reported that one Indian national had died and four people remained missing. However, Gabonese authorities had not confirmed the reported fatality in their official statement, making it important to distinguish reported information from officially confirmed details.

What Caused the Drilling Rig to Sink?

Preliminary information indicates that the incident may have involved a punch-through event during preload activities. This process is part of preparing and assessing a jack-up rig's stability before drilling operations begin. During such activities, the rig's supporting legs interact with the seabed as loads are applied to assess the foundation's ability to support the structure. A sudden loss of seabed support can affect stability. In this case, preliminary information suggests that the rig lost stability during the process. The precise sequence of events and the factors that led to the sinking have yet to be established by a technical investigation. A technical investigation has been ordered to determine what happened and identify the circumstances that contributed to the incident.

Companies and Offshore Operations

Borr Drilling, which owns and operates the rig, and BW Energy, for whose offshore operations the unit was contracted, are central to the incident's operational context. The sinking occurred as the rig was preparing for a planned drilling campaign, rather than during a confirmed active drilling operation, according to the information currently available. The incident has raised questions about offshore rig stability, seabed conditions and safety procedures during preparation work. The investigation will be important in establishing whether equipment, operational conditions or other factors played a role. No definitive cause should be treated as established until investigators complete their assessment.
